Cecil Falls 1-0 in World Series Opener
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - No. 20 Cecil softball fell just short in its opening contest of the NJCAA Division 2 World Series, dropping a 1-0 game to the No. 13 Northwest Mississippi Rangers.
Neither Cecil and Northwest scored through the first six innings. The Seahawks best chance came in the top of the first with runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Taylor Stapleford worked through runners in scoring positon during all but two frames, stranding eight runners on base. This included a bases loaded situation in the fifth.
Stapleford returned for the seventh, walking the leadoff hitter before forcing the next batter to line out. An error and a single loaded the bases, bringing the tying run 90 feet away. Sela Mancini stepped up for the Rangers a drove a 2-0 pitch past the left side of the infield to end the game.
Stapleford (17-3) allowed one earned run on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
Gabriella Smith and Keira Wolfe recorded one hit each.
