NORTH EAST, Md. - No. 2 seed Cecil softball earned a place in the Region 20 Division 2 Tournament semifinals on Saturday, defeating No. 7 Hagerstown twice in the quarterfinal round to advance.
The Seahawks improve to 20-10 overall after the sweep.
Game One - Cecil 11, Hagerstown 3
Cecil picked up one run in the first after a walk and smart base running from Taja Souza brought her home. The Seahawks relied on the arm of Taylor Stapleford over the next three frames. Stapleford (13-2) struck out seven of the first 10 batters she faced, allowing just one walk during this window.
Souza sparked more offense in the bottom of the third. The freshman outfielder singled before stealing two bases, then was driven home on a Kylee Bergman sacrifice fly. Cecil turned up the heat from there, loading the bases over the next three batters. 4 walks and an RBI-single by Souza drove in five more runs before the side was retired.
Stapleford sat down Hagerstown in four batters in the fourth. Souza would enter the circle in the fifth and dance around an early walk and a fielding error to hold of the Hawks. Hagerstown fired off three runs in the sixth, but couldn't keep Cecil off the bases in the bottom of the frame. The Seahawks loaded the bases with two outs, then saw four straight batters walk to win the contest via the mercy rule.
Souza and Keira Wolfe led with two hits and two RBI. Souza also stole three bags and walked twice. Bergman finished with two RBI.
Game Two - Cecil 17, Hagerstown 3
Cecil scored in every frame of game two, highlighted by a 10-run third that punched the Seahawks' ticket into the semifinals. The inning was kicked off with a two-run homer from Kylee Bergman and ended with a three-run blast off the bat of Gabriella Smith.
Taylor Stapleford (14-2) continued to dominate from the circle, striking out eight over four innings. Taja Souza closed out the game with a scoreless fifth.
Bergman, Keira Wolfe, and Lily DeLong finished with two hits each. Smith led all batters with five RBI. Keira Fendt funneled in three RBI.
