NORTH EAST, Md. - Cecil softball picked up a win against the four-time defending Region 20 champion Potomac State.
The Seahawks are now 16-10 (11-5 R20) after Sunday's results.
Game One - Cecil 3, Potomac State 0
Taylor Stapleford and Taja Souza combined to pitch a shutout for the second game in as many days, as Cecil took the opener against the Catamounts.
Stapleford (11-2) stranded a runner at third with two outs in the first. After two runners got into scoring position in the second, she struck out the next three batters to retire the side.
The Seahawks took the lead after a three-run third frame. Taja Souza blasted a double to left center that scored two, then was driven in on a single by Kylee Bergman.
Stapleford flew through the fourth, then stranded a runner on second in the fifth before making way for Souza in the sixth.
Souza (SV, 1) worked her way through the top of Potomac State's lineup, avoiding a dangerous runner on second after an interference call and a ground out haulted the Catamounts. A double to lead off the seventh went sideways for the visitors after a great relay in from Riley deRoulac took down the runner. A ground out and a fly out later gave the Seahawks the victory.
Game Two - Potomac State 6, Cecil 4
Cecil took an early 1-0 lead after Taja Souza scored on a wild pitch in the first. The score stayed 1-0 through the next 3 1/2 frames thanks to strong pitching from Taylor Stapleford.
The Seahawks struck again in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair after RBI knocks from Kendel Leonardi and Lily DeLong. However, Cecil would leave the bases loaded without any further damge.
Potomac State would score two runs on an error and an obstruction call in the sixth. The Seahawks loaded the diamond with two in the bottom of the inning, but a fielders choice took away the opportunity.
The Catamounts took its only lead of the day in the top of the seventh. An error put runners on the corners with no outs and the next batter would score them both. An eventual double followed by a second Cecil error led to two more runs for Potomac State before Souza (5-5) retired the side.
The Seahawks fought hard to keep the game going in the bottom of the seventh. Kylee Bergman and Lily DeLong both singled to start the frame. Gabriella Smith rolled into a fielder's choice, but the ball was deep enough to score Bergman. However, the next two batters would go down in order to allow Potomac State to leave with a split on the day.
