NORTH EAST, Md. - Cecil softball freshman pitcher Taylor Stapleford threw the second no-hitter of her collegiate career, leading the Seahawks to a win over Salem in the opening contest.
The Seahawks move to 14-6 after today's results.
Game One - Cecil 5, Salem 0
Stapleford tossed 19 strikeouts in a dominant display from the circle. She left two runners stranded in scoring position in the second and one in third. Stapleford sat down Salem in order in the other five innings.
Cecil's offense produced five runs on nine hits. Kylee Bergman doubled down the line in the first to bring home one run. Riley deRoulac singled to drive home Bergman, then doubled in the fifth to drive her home again. An error in the same frame scored deRoulac and Gabriella Smith for a 5-0 lead.
Lily DeLong finished with two hits at the dish, while Taja Souza chipped in one hit and one stolen base.
Game Two - Salem 11, Cecil 1
Cecil's offense fell victim to a strong Salem performance in game two. Lily DeLong would single in the bottom of the second for Cecil's only hit. Kendel Leonardi walked twice and Keira Wolfe received one free pass.
Malea Ferdinando (0-2) took the loss from the rubber.
