Bio
Emeka Chiazor is entering his first season as the head men's basketball coach.
A proven developer of talent and a respected recruiter along the East Coast, Emeka “Mek” Chiazor brings a wealth of experience, energy, and player-first leadership to the sidelines.
Coach Mek joined the coaching staff at Cecil College in the summer of 2024 and made an immediate impact, helping engineer one of the nation’s most impressive turnarounds. Under his guidance, the Seahawks soared from an 8-23 record in 2024 to a remarkable 23-8 campaign, capped by finishing at the top of region 20 fueled by standout Region 20 Player of the Year Jadien Guy—whose growth and dominance this season can be partly attributed to Chiazor’s mentorship and basketball acumen.
Known throughout recruiting circles as a relentless grinder with deep ties across the East Coast, Chiazor has consistently attracted high-level talent to every program he’s touched. His ability to connect with student-athletes, both on and off the court, has earned him the reputation of a true “players’ coach”—someone who demands excellence but understands the human element of coaching at the collegiate level.
Before his time at Cecil, Chiazor served as an assistant coach at Harford Community College, where he played a pivotal role in leading the team to a Maryland JUCO Conference Championship in just one season (2017–18). He also held key coaching positions at Howard Community College (2014–2016) and launched his career as a student assistant under legendary head coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell at Coppin State University. There, his talent was quickly recognized, and he was promoted to Director of Basketball Operations during his tenure from 2011–2014.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Chiazor briefly stepped away from coaching for a successful stint in the private sector—but his passion for the game never wavered. Now back on the court, he continues to shape programs, elevate players, and leave a lasting impact on every stop in his coaching journey.
