The Cecil College Grounds Crew began demolition of the existing baseball and softball batting cages this week to prepare the surface for a new indoor baseball and softball facility located directly behind the two fields on campus. They began by dissembling the batting cages' nets, ripping up the turf from underneath, forcibly removing the poles from the ground, and leveling the surface for the new 60' x 120' facility.
The inspiration for the facility was sparked by a conversation between an anonymous benefactor and members of the Cecil College Athletic Department. Immediately following the conversation, the unnamed benefactor generously donated two Iron Mikes pitching machines to assist with the devlopment of student-athletes that are members of the baseball and softball programs. This donation brought the realization for the need of an indoor, on-site practice facility that would allow the majority of our student-athletes to practice on campus, escpecially during inclement weather.
A team of Cecil College employees and donors have been working diligiently to raise funds to make the facility a reality this spring. If you are interested in donanting financial or other resourses, such as concrete and labor to complete the pole building, please contact Ed Durham, Director of Athletics, at (443) 674-1556 or Charlie O'Brien, Head Baseball Coach, at (443) 945-0602.
The preparations are laying the ground work for the project to be completed in February 2018.
